The Haunted Valley (Linda Craig, No. 7)

Author: Ann Sheldon
Average review score:

Linda Craig Series : Horses! Action! Mystery!
16-year-old Linda and her palomino filly, Chica d'Oro, search for the ghost that has recently started haunting a dude ranch in Nevada near Death Valley.

Linda Craig is similar to the Nancy Drew series books but has a more Western ranch-style HORSE focus. Everyone rides horses in this series which makes it great reading for the horse lover.

Hebrews : A New Translation With Introduction and Commentary (Anchor Bible. V. 36.)
Published in Hardcover by Doubleday (15 May, 2001)
Author: Craig R. Koester
Average review score:

Exceeds expectations
Like all commentary sets, the Anchor series varies in quality. There are some really terrific New Testament volumes (eg., Acts and Romans by Fitzmyer, 1 & 2 Thessalonians by Malherbe, James by L.T. Johnson), and this work on Hebrews by Craig Koester is now one of the finest in the Anchor series. Koester's work is extraordinarily lucid. The introduction is simply a masterpiece! Koester clearly presents the background, the author's use of classical rhetoric, and the history of debate surrounding Hebrews.

One could wish for more interaction with other commentators throughout the work, but it is hard to complain with such penetrating and lucid exegesis. After all, the work is already near 600 pages and would have been much larger had Koester engaged in further interaction.

I appreciate the way in which Koester gets to the heart of the matter in the text without loosing sight of the context. For those who have struggled with the warning passages (6:4, ff and 10:26, ff), I think you will find Koester's explanation especially cogent and helpful. Koester's treatment of Christology in Hebrews is profound.

Overall, IMHO, this is one of the finest commentaries available on Hebrews. The clarity of Koester's work makes studying Hebrews a joy.

Holyoke, MA
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (01 July, 1997)
Author: Craig Della Penna
Average review score:

Great Book! One of the "Images of America" titles.
Let me preface that this is my uncle's book, so I am somewhat biased!

However, I loved this book. He has put together a wonderful pictorial representation of old Holoyoke MA drawing on pictures from local historical archives. You really get a feel for what life was like during the turn of the century, and some visions of how it has changed.

This was my first "Images of America" book, but since then I have purchased numerous others. What a great way to see local istory.

Hoover Dam (Building America)
Published in Paperback by Blackbirch Marketing (June, 2001)
Authors: Craig A. Doherty and Katherine M. Doherty
Average review score:

Detailed content, wonderful photos, my 4th graders loved it!
After a field trip to the Hoover Dam, my fourth-graders used this book to further satisfy their appetite for information on the construction of, and reasons for building the Dam. The text is clearly written, very detailed, and the photographs are outstanding. The authors added a glossary, a chronology, and further reading sources to enhance an already great resource. We read this book together, but I found my students taking the book back to their seats for more. It is a great source for reports as well. I recommend it highly to both parents and teachers. It can easily be used across the curriculum.
